  • MILI 1191
    Battle of Acre 1191
Another publication, Battle Abbey Roll Volume 3 , says that this Sir John de St. John (incorrectly naming him as the son of Thomas St. John living in 1166; and father of Roger St. John who died in 1265) went with Coeur de Lion [Richard I, the Lionheart (1157-1199)] to the Holy Land, and, at the siege of Acrew (1191), was one of the chosen knights whom the King, “on inspiration of St. George, had distinguished by causing them to tie a thong or garter around the leg.” This John St. John was born before 1191 but probably not before 1185; whereby he would have been just a boy during the Siege of Acre in 1191.
The John St. John, in Generation four, was succeeded by his son Thomas by 1168, making it impossible for that John to be at the Siege of Acre in 1191. Thomas died without issue and his estate passed to his younger brother, by 1176, Roger (Generation 5) who was living during the time of The Siege of Acre in 1191 but there is no mention of him participating. His son, another John, as stated was at best, just a boy during this event; it seems unlikely that he was born about 1176 to participate in this event. (He was aged at least 18 years old in 1214 where he was named son and heir of his father and placed under the wardship of Geoffrey de Lucy (CI. 16 Joh.m 17) probably until he was aged 21, making him unlikely to have been born any earlier than 1193, two years after the event but clearly no earlier than 1185, just a boy at the time of the event).
There was a second “Siege of Acre” also called the Fall of Acre that occurred in 1291 which seems to be more in line with Generation Eight, John St. John, 1st Baron St. John of Lageham resulting in the creation of the Barony of Lageham. (Another possibility is that if such a John St. John was with Richard I, then he is probably in the de Port-St. John line but this also seems unlikely Another publication, names the man at the Siege of Acre as a Thomas St. John but I likewise can find no such Thomas living during this time period.)
