Heraldry of La Haye-Pesnel
Heraldry of La Haye-Pesnel
Or with two fess Azure with 9 martlets Gules.

Official blason
(fr) D'or à deux fasces d'azur accompagnées de neuf merlettes de gueules ordonnées en orle, 4, 2 et 3.
Origin/meaning
The arms are those of the Paynel family, former lords of the village.

A marlet in English heraldry is a mythical bird without feet which never roosts and is continuously on the wing. It is a compelling allegory for continuous effort, expressed in heraldic charge depeicting stylised bird similar to a swift or a house martin, without feet.

The origin of the name means 'little martin'. It may refer to the festival Martinmas which occurs around the same time martins begin their migration from Europe to Africa.

It has been suggested that the restlessness of the martlet due to its supposed inability to land, having no usable feet, is the reason for the use of the martlet in English heraldry as the cadency mark of a fourth son.

The first inherited all by primogeniture
the second and third went into the church
fourth had no well-defined place

*******************************************
I believe this heraldry was created by Wimund de la Haye-Paynel the founder of La Haye-Pesnel. I believe the 9 martlets represent his 8 sons and 1 daughter.

Martlet may also be the symbol of hard work, perseverance, and a nomadic household.

Some think it is used to symbolize the constant quest for knowledge, learning, and adventure.

Marlets appear in the arms of Worcester College, University College at Oxford university, Magdalene College and Pembroke College at Cambridge etc.
