    • The following letter/obit was written by William St. John for his father Daniel. Someone

posted it on Daniel St. John?s memorial on www.findagrave.com. It was taken from page 4 of the Willamette Farmer, Salem, Oregon, January 7, 1881 edition. My transcript of Daniel?s obit is given below. I guessed at a couple of the words. It is very blurry in places.

      Editor Willamette Farmer:

Died, at his residence in Benton county, December 30, 1880, after a nine weeks? illness of lung diseases, Daniel St. John, age 72 years and 7 months. He was born in the State of Connecticut in 1808, and moved to the State of New York in 1830; in 1832 he emigrated to Michigan and remained there four years; in 1836 he moved from that State to Milwaukie, Wis., and remained there until the Spring of ?49 when he started with an ox team for California, but owing to rumors of Indian hostilities on the California road, he turned and came to Oregon, where he settled on a farm in Marion county, two miles south of Aurora. In 1868 he sold out there and moved to Tillamook county, where he resided until 1878, when he moved to Benton county and bought the farm upon which he died. He left a wife and many children and grandchildren, has a large circle of friends to mourn his loss.

Oregon, Wisconsin and Michigan papers please copy.

This obit answers the questions on when he moved from one state to the other and from one county to the other in Oregon. Interesting about how close it came to his settling in California.
