    Bute County, North Carolina was organized about 1754, and in 1779 its territory was divided into two new counties, Franklin and Warren, and the name of the former ceased to exist. In some old remnants of the tax lists of Bute County, North Carolina now in the rooms of the Historical Commission at Raleigh, the name of William St. John appears as early as 1771-1773.
