    Newell House, Marion N.Y.
Mark Newell, in 1816 was granted title to 46 acres of land, and the old deed bears the name of Peres St John, as a previous owner. Land was transferred by Joseph Fellows, attorney for Lord Alloway and Masterton Ure. Another parcel of land adjoining was secured to Mark Newell by original grantors title.
Mark Newell, built on the farm, a frame house, for which the timber was cut on the farm. As the years passed, many rooms were added to the original house. One of the features of the house was a huge fireplace. It was finely furnished for that day, and a divan and mirror of early date are now owned by a descendant.
Like many old houses it has the reputation of being haunted and tradition says a murder was once committed there. A report that bank robbers of an early day, buried their loot on the farm, caused people to dig on the farm at night, in hopes to unearth the treasure and their lights seen, gave rise also to the idea of ghostly visitants.
One of the tenants, fifty years ago, claimed to have accidentally imprisoned himself in a secret room, from which he finally escaped after hours of feeling about the walls.
The house was fitted with gigantic locks and keys.
The property is still in the Newell family, and the owner in 1939 is Maude Newell, N.Y. City.
