Mr. St. John was born in Ulster County, N.Y., and upon reaching manhood engaged in farming in that State. When the War of 1812 broke out, he enlisted and valiantly went to the front. Returning, he settled in Steuben County, N.Y., and there, at an advanced age, he died. In Ulster County he married Ruth Carpenter, of German ancestry. She died in Steuben County in her eighty-first year. Their children were: Jane, Harvey, Eliza, Daniel, Rebecca, Sarah (Mrs. Chandler), who is mentioned below; Samuel, Mary, William, who served as Lieutenant in a New York regiment for three years during the Civil War, and. Wealthy. The parents were worthy citizens and noble Christians, both being consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. |
